Glazing : Adapting and Modifying will give participants the skills to harness the variables of glaze chemistry and equip you with the ability to modify a glaze's colour, texture, surface finish and firing temperature. In a nutshell, this course is about reading your results and manipulating recipes.

Through carefully selected theoretical and practical elements this workshop is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills to:

  • Modify a glaze recipe to be glossy or matt;

  • Identify the behaviour of raw materials and gain a deeper understanding of how fluxes can impact an additive's colour;

  • Identity the factors responsible for changes in glaze results;

  • Competently use glaze calculators, stull maps and unity molecular formula;

  • Understand how to alter a glazes firing temperature; and

  • Practise good health and safety with glaze-making and protecting your kiln.

Through practical testing and use of digital tools participants will expand on their foundational understanding of glaze chemistry and develop greater control over the many variables that can alter the outcome of glazes.

You will use stoneware and porcelain test tiles and come away with multiple glaze tests to contribute to your personal glaze library. You’ll also be introduced to a range of tools to support the recording and documentation of your recipes.

The workshop will focus on the development of stoneware glazes. Due to the ranging activities on the course participants will need to bring along a dust mask and suitable weighing scales. Further details will be provided nearer the course start date.

Class sizes are limited to 8 participants to ensure there is enough time for individual guidance and a productive group dynamic.

Level: This course is suitable for potters and ceramic artists who have either participated on the Glazing : Fundamental Skills course/equivalent or have a basic understanding of glaze chemistry and can make glazes from constituent ingredients.

Duration: Saturday 5th and Saturday 12th October 10.30am - 4.30pm

Includes: Test tiles, glaze materials, firings, tea and coffee (herbal and dairy free alternatives available), afternoon cake.

Tutor: Chloe Monks

Chloe Monks is a contemporary ceramic artist from Bristol. Chloe Graduated from the MA Ceramics & Glass Programme at the Royal College of Art in 2020. During this time she began to investigate the material properties of ceramics and was heavily influenced by the core fluidity of glaze.
