Anne Gibbs

Anne Gibbs makes small abstract sculptures primarily in porcelain and bone china. Her portfolio comprises of stand-alone forms, still life compositions and carefully curated installations often displayed with mixed media components. Her work is highly distinctive, working with limited colour palettes and combining both slip casting and handbuilding techniques.

Anne draws upon her daily walks and local surroundings to initiate ideas; seeking out contrasting textures and forms to translate into clay. She is an avid collector of fashion magazines whose other worldly photographs seem to translate into her own work. She creates landscapes and narratives which can appear familiar and yet unnerving at the same time. She aims to stir emotions through close inspection of her use of material and the compositions she creates.

In 2015, Anne was the recipient of a Creative Wales Award from the Arts Council of Wales. As part of the award, she travelled to Japan to receive lessons in Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement. The experience has encouraged her to further develop and examine the use of colour and curation in her practice.

Anne was the recipient of the Purchase Prize (2023) at the National Eisteddfod of Wales. She was also shortlisted for the Young Masters Grand Prize (2019) with the Cynthia Corbett Gallery, London and the British Ceramics Biennial (2015) Stoke-on-Trent. She holds a BA Honours in Fine Art, printmaking (1994), PGCE (FE) in (1999) and an MA Ceramics (2004) at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.

Anne lives and works in Cardiff, Wales.
